Mid-Season Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips

Tips for Keeping your Lawn Mower Running all Summer

Now that Summer is half-way over, chances are, you’ve already put a decent amount of hours on your lawn mower this summer.  If you want to keep your lawn mower running smooth all summer, this is the perfect time of year to give your lawn mower some mid-season maintenance.  In less than 30 minutes, you can be sure that your mower is ready to handle the last half of mowing season.  Here are six simple steps to giving your lawn mower a Mid-Season Tune Up!

1. Clean all Debris off Mower and Under Deck

The first step to giving your lawn mower some mid-season maintenance is to clean it up a little bit.  During prime mowing season, your mower has probably collected some dirt, debris, and grass.  Be sure to clean thoroughly underneath the mower deck.  If you don’t regularly clean underneath your deck, the moisture in the grass can cause rust to build up underneath your deck.

PRO TIP2PRO TIP: Conserve water and use an air compressor to quickly rid the mower deck of all debris.  If you don’t have an air compressor, a leaf blower will do the trick!

bolt2. Tighten all Bolts and Hardware

Over time, vibrations can cause bolts and other hardware on your lawn mower to loosen.  Using the appropriate wrench, tighten up all hardware and bolts.

3. Grease Parts

A little bit of grease can help keep your mower moving smoothly.  Apply some lubricant to all moving parts, including the axle, inside the wheels, cables, and bearings.

air filter4. Check the Air Filter

If your air filter is getting dirty, it’s probably time to change it!  If you have a paper air filter, then replacing it will maximize your lawn mower’s performance.  If you have a foam air filter, then cleaning it will work just fine.  Clean it thoroughly with soap and water to remove all debris, grass, etc.

5. Inflate Tires

Properly inflated tires improve gas mileage, and reduce the wear on your turf!  Be sure to inflate all of your tires to the proper level.

blades6. Check the Blades

Without a doubt, the most important part of keeping your lawn mower properly maintained is the blades.  Lawn mower blades that are properly balanced and sharpened can make all the difference in the world when it comes the quality of your cut.  Carefully inspect your lawn mowers’ blades for dull or chipped edges and missing chunks.
